How Many Names Are on the Memorial

The 9/11 Memorial carries 2,983 names on the bronze parapets around its two pools: the 2,977 people killed on 11 September 2001 in New York, at the Pentagon and on Flight 93, and the six killed in the bombing of the World Trade Center on 26 February 1993.

2,983 names

The names run round both pools, cut through the bronze so that they can be read by touch. They include the victims at the Pentagon and on Flight 93 as well as the 2,753 killed in New York. The six of 1993 are grouped together. The history page gives the dates.

How the names are arranged

The names are grouped by what the memorial calls meaningful adjacencies: colleagues, flight crews, first-responder units and requests from families, rather than alphabetical order. The North Pool carries the names from the North Tower and the South Pool those from the South Tower. Inside the museum, In Memoriam shows a portrait of each of the 2,983; the inside page describes it.
