The Repository at Bedrock

A repository holding the unidentified remains of victims of 11 September 2001 lies behind a wall at bedrock, between the two tower footprints, under the care of the New York City Office of Chief Medical Examiner. It is not an exhibit, it is not visible to the public, and it is opened only to victims’ families, in a reflection room. The medical examiner continues to identify victims.

What the repository is

The remains were moved to the repository on 10 May 2014, before the museum opened on 21 May. It is separate from the exhibition spaces. The history page records the date without further detail.

What visitors see

Nothing of the repository. Museum visitors see the exhibitions, Foundation Hall and the objects described on the inside page. The placement of the repository was one of the points raised by some families in 2014, noted on the criticisms page.
